CHAPTER 15

The next morning Linc was in a hurry to get dressed and head over to the B & B. Brigid barely had time to get ready herself before she hurried along with him. The guest parking was on the other side of the B & B, making it impossible to know for sure until they got closer if Randy’s car was there. Brigid found herself holding her breath as they walked, hoping the car would be in the parking lot. Meanwhile, Jett trotted ahead of them blissfully unaware of their unspoken words, but knowing the routine of the morning.

When they got to the back door, Linc stepped to the corner of the house, peeking around it as Brigid opened the door and let Jett inside.

“His car still isn’t here,” Linc said as they entered the back door of the B & B which led right into the kitchen. “I’m not sure we should bother to make breakfast. If he’s not here, there’s no point.” He started chewing on his thumbnail, a sure sign that he was getting upset.

Brigid was beginning to think that Linc might be right. After all, if Randy’s car wasn’t there, he had to be somewhere else. It wasn’t as if the B & B was located in the middle of town. They weren’t somewhere that was in easy walking distance if say, he’d gone to a bar and didn’t want to drive back. Her hope that everything was okay with him was starting to dwindle.

“Let’s go check to see if anything’s different elsewhere. Maybe he got a ride back here last night,” she said, grasping at straws. “Maybe he had a designated driver to bring him here.” That was the only reason she could think of to explain why Randy would come back without his car, and as worried as Linc appeared to be, he needed that possibility to be said aloud.

“Let’s hope that’s it,” Linc muttered as he headed across the kitchen and towards the rest of the B & B.

They stepped through the door that led them into what used to be the living room, but was now the reception area. They looked around, but everything seemed to be pretty much the same. Brigid thought the pillows on the couch might have been arranged a little differently, but since the dogs often came over to the B & B with them and ran around in it, it was hard to say for sure.

“Maybe he’ll show up in time for breakfast,” Brigid said. “Maybe he just spent the night somewhere or something. After all, he’s under no obligation to eat here.”

“Maybe I should go knock on his door to check,” he began. “At least that way we’ll know if he’s here.”

“Linc, I know you’re worried about him, but what if he’s asleep?” she asked. That wasn’t to say she wasn’t worried, but she didn’t want them to overstep any professional boundaries. She knew they were walking a fine line with this.

Linc started to open his mouth, but a sound down the hall of the B & B made him stop.
